Breakdown Press first created a ‘poster series’ in the form of a newspaper in 2006 to coincide with the Indigenous-led protests and convergence at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. The series was titled The Stolenwealth Poster Series, with artists looking at the issues of Genocide, Sovereignty and Treaty.

In 2006, we initiated The Breakdown Posters addressing issues of corporate globalisation, coinciding with the G20 protests in Melbourne. The Nuclear Posters, in 2007, investigated the nuclear industry in the lead-up to the Federal Election that finally kicked John Howard out for good.

Now we’re very proud to be presenting our 4th Breakdown Poster Series – The Peace Posters.

Breakdown Press, a Melbourne-based publishing outfit with a background in zines, street art, and activism has published a free, 32-page broadsheet featuring posters for peace.

The aim of the The Peace Posters, the latest in Breakdown’s ongoing poster series, is to create compelling designs that promote peace and get them in as many bedrooms, offices, and public places as possible. The poster is an enduring art form that continues to capture our imagination.

We are very excited to have been able to include artwork and writing not only from across Australia, but also from Iran, USA, Spain and France, and also by people whose lives cross many borders. We believe there is much hope to be found in playfully creating solidarity around the world, to build peaceful autonomous alliances that traverse governmental borders.

Actions against war and towards the building of a peaceful society couldn’t be more relevant today. Especially considering not only Australia’s involvement in conflicts overseas (the war in Afghanistan has been raging for nine years) but also the involvement of Australia in the manufacturing of war machines, the use of Australia as a centre for US military bases, and the everyday injustice faced by Indigenous Australians particularly in areas under the Federal Government intervention.

One featured poet, Mammad Aidani, says he hopes that people reading his work “reflect deeper that war and hatred are not the solutions for our problems in this violent world, and recognise that peace, human rights for all and freedom are the only ways which can unite us. We need to respect, care, recognise and learn how to live together regardless of who we are, what we believe and where we come from. We have a long way to go, but we must never lose hope and determination and work as hard as we can to make this dream possible.

—–
We are able to organise high res versions of the images for re-publishing and/or interviews with featured artists.

For 40 years it has been one of the first ports of call for new arrivals, cutting across socio-economic divisions and now it is faced with a development revamp. MARKET CROSSINGS is a searing & colourful look into the gentrification of Melbourne’s most vibrant cultural melting pot.

“Hundreds of thousands of lines of movement and history, criss-crossing in every which direction, with the Preston Market sitting square in the middle.” – Victoria Stead

MARKET CROSSINGS is a collection of stories & testimonies by the traders & patrons of the Preston Market alongside researched insights into the social functions of live markets. This publication was developed over two years during the Market Value project, an innovative cultural development project which enabled participants to express shared values.

The documentary film included in the book captures character portraits of small business owners & employees, the figurative economic canaries in the coal mine. During the global financial crisis as the traders struggle to keep their roller doors open, the developers are forced to temporarily suspend their multi million dollar plans.

This new book has been published by Breakdown Press and produced by TRAX Arts. First released paperback, 10 April 2010 ISBN 978 0 64652 753 6

We’re putting together another Breakdown Poster Series! And this time we’re seeking posters about PEACE.

It’s an interesting time to be reflecting on Australia’s role in international politics, particularly in light of the upcoming visit by the US President Barack Hussein Obama. Australia is still involved in wars of aggression in the Middle East where military interventions are still being enacted. Indigenous people in the Northern Territory, where incidentally a US base is located, are also being subjected to interventionist policies.

This is a great chance for designers, artists and writers to work towards creating a peaceful future. Hopefully these posters will end up on bedroom walls, in workplaces, streets, shopfronts and schools!

Artists and designers are encouraged to use writing and statistics from academics, historians, poets, scientists, activists and song writers in their poster designs. We want to see stencils, printmaking, illustration, painting, typography, photography and collage in poster designs. Think handmade.

So get crackin’ and send ya work in before 1st May!

Zines and the Punk Scene with DX
You want me to talk about zines and the punk scene?
I will talk about the history of the zine in punk, starting
from the early post-glam and proto-punk newsletters
and contemporaries of WHO PUT THE BOMP?, to
today’s similarly isolated and ignored rags. I’ll attempt
to offer ideas of what kinds of reference points the
most notable zines were drawing influence from so
people can do further research, and give some
solid “real” examples of great fanzine writing and
artwork in a “real zine”.

Susy Pow: How to make zines your entire life
The puppy revolves around my unending
(unplanned) mission to let zines take over my life.
From making zines to organising zine fairs to running
a distro to hosting and running workshops to talking
at festivals like this sucker to running a zine shop, I’ll try
to encompass all it requires to lose your soul to zines.
Take some advice and lose yourself to zines or simply
come to heckle me about being a sellout or being
boring. Whatever you can take from this, I suggest you
take all measures to ensure you’re satiated.

Susy explains how she makes zines pay the
rent. She’s famous even.

Woozy fanzine ran from 1992 to 2001 and encompassed
22 issues in a variety of formats from mini zines to books
as well as a tape and a CD. Bringing together a variety of
DIY currents in music, art, comics and politics Woozy was
a mainstay of the Melbourne zine scene (although issues
were also produced in the UK and Netherlands) involving
over 100 contributors with the majority of issues partially or
wholly laid out by hand. More than 20 launches and
benefits were also organised by the co-editors Iain McIntyre
and Laura MacFarlane who also ran Choozy which
distributed a number of zines and musical works in the late
1990s. Iain McIntyre will talk about the history of the zine and
1990s zine culture in general. He’ll also bring in copies of
Woozy for people to check out.

3CR’s fifth Seeds Of Dissent Calendar looks ahead to imagine a future we want to live in, while also celebrating Australia’s radical history. They asked 12 artists who are part of Australian activist culture to contribute an artwork that reflects their idea of the future. Some artists have created images that imagine the ideal future and some have chosen to depict issues we need to address today in order to achieve it.

Visit 3CR at 21 Smith Street and pay $22 cash eftpos or credit card during business hours. Call us with your credit card details on 03 9419 8377 during business hours. Send a cheque/money order to “Community Radio Federation Ltd” PO Box 1277 Collingwood VIC 3066. Cost for calendars is $22 plus $6 postage.

Or buy your 2010 Seeds of Dissent Calendar from one of these independent bookstores.

Australian history re-envisioned with a cheeky female bushranger, uranium mining and the need to recognise the interdependence of ecology, the tyrannical expectations of female beauty, the return of tumbling as a form of transportation (!), Indigenous people at the heart of popular culture… these are the some of the issues explored by artists such as Arlene Texta Queen, Deborah Kelly, Bindi Cole, Adam Hill, Tom O’Hern, Mitch, Jo Waite, Rayna Fahey, Tom Civil, Mickie Quick, Lachlan Conn and Paul J Kalemba.

Cross-stitched samplers, stencils, felt pen drawings, collages, cartoons, illustration, computer art… these are the media the artists use to take us into the future of the 2010 Seeds of Dissent Calendar. The 2010 Seeds of Dissent! Calendar invited 12 fabulous Australian artists to create their vision for the future.

In 2006 3CR created a Seeds of Dissent! Calendar to celebrate 3CR’s 30th birthday. The full colour, nationally distributed calendar teemed with radical dates, ideas and inspiration for social change. The calendar sold out of its 2000 copies. Since then 3CR’s Promotions Sub Committee’s Calendar Team has produced a yearly calendar, each with a fresh theme.

There has been lots of action here at Breakdown Press and we are so excited to be launching our new book “How to Make Trouble and Influence People” written by Iain McIntyre.

This book is a collected and expanded edition of the publication of the same name, the original version of which came out in 1996 as an 80-page, self-published zine documenting and celebrating Australian political pranking and creative direct action. It proved to be a modest success and was reprinted a number of times by anarchist collective Scam Publications before spawning two sequels, “How To Stop Whining And Start Living” in 1999 and “Revenge Of The Troublemaker” in 2003. With all of these publications long out of print Iain has, with the aid of us here at Breakdown Press Tom Sevil and Lou Smith, brought together the best of the material from the first three books along with hundreds of new listings, interviews, and graphics. “How to make Trouble and Influence People” will be launched in Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne and more cities soon. Keep an eye on our homepage for details.

Also take a look around a new website for directions on how to order previous publications and for info about our upcoming poster series The Peace Posters. More details coming soon on how to contribute artworks and designs to this new poster series.
