ENVIRONMENTAL EMERGENCY – NO MORE SPILLS!

It’s important for this moment not to pass, in the tragedy of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico we must consider ending all offshore drilling for oil. Full stop. Our oceans are too precious for this madness. Maybe it’s time to question the arrogance of people – such as BP – who believe they can create such monstrosities without the possibility of disaster. A very sad time indeed.

A wake up call to all those who have been misled by the green-washing, or environmental spin, of oil companies and in particular BP.

For more info on other projects BP are involved in (and their environmental spinn) see www.bp.com.

Announcing our Fourth Poster Series to contribute to!

Breakdown Press will be producing a newsprint publication titled The Peace Posters, with the support of Graham F. Smith Peace Trust. The publication will be a collection of posters designed by Australian artists and writers to educate and raise awareness on the vital issues of peace. Artists will be encouraged to create new work which will be produced as posters on the general themes of peace building, the arms trade, redirection of resources toward a peaceful society, militarisation of everyday life, environmental impacts of war, and global harmony.

We intend to print the collection of posters as a publication which will be distributed for free (similar to street press) through bookshops, community organisations, art galleries and universities nationally. By distributing the poster Ssries broadly and for free we hope to engage with a broad range of people and increase community action on these issues. Currently there seems to be a lack of independent posters about peace being produced that educate and inspire without focusing on a particular event, organisation, company or place, and which are aesthetically exciting. We love the idea that these posters will end up on bedroom walls, in workplaces, streetscapes, shopfronts and schools!

Our desire is to bring creative culture makers into the peace campaign; to educate not only themselves but also the broader public through provocative, intelligent and affecting poster designs. We strongly believe in the ability of artists to fundamentally alter perceptions in society.

Below: Street rock posters of the 2 chosen designs from The Nuclear Posters. Seen plastered on the site of a construction site in Melbourne in the weeks leading up to the 2007 Federal Election.

If anyone has any ideas how to find financial support  to help print similar large scale street posters for this series please get in touch via info@breakdownpress.org
