Zines and the Punk Scene with DX
You want me to talk about zines and the punk scene?
I will talk about the history of the zine in punk, starting
from the early post-glam and proto-punk newsletters
and contemporaries of WHO PUT THE BOMP?, to
today’s similarly isolated and ignored rags. I’ll attempt
to offer ideas of what kinds of reference points the
most notable zines were drawing influence from so
people can do further research, and give some
solid “real” examples of great fanzine writing and
artwork in a “real zine”.

Happy Times Comics and Stories Issue 6 Launch
After a deal of perplexing anticipation comes the sixth
issue of my zine series ‘Happy Times Comics and
Stories’. It is the follow-up to my fifth issue, produced
after a long zine-making hiatus, which was described
by my father as having “handwriting that’s difficult to
read”. Come welcome the new issue, all based around
the theme of botany, and see how I do this time.

Susy Pow: How to make zines your entire life
The puppy revolves around my unending
(unplanned) mission to let zines take over my life.
From making zines to organising zine fairs to running
a distro to hosting and running workshops to talking
at festivals like this sucker to running a zine shop, I’ll try
to encompass all it requires to lose your soul to zines.
Take some advice and lose yourself to zines or simply
come to heckle me about being a sellout or being
boring. Whatever you can take from this, I suggest you
take all measures to ensure you’re satiated.

susy

Susy explains how she makes zines pay the
rent. She’s famous even.

Macarons are Not Macaroons launch
Do you know the difference between a macaron
and a macaroon? Did you even know there was a
difference between macarons and macaroons?
Part educational, part entertaining, mostly about
biscuits, this is the zine launch you don’t want to miss
if you are a fan of either baking or eating the things
other people have baked.
Both macarons and macaroons will be provided for
comparison, contrast and scrutiny so bring yourself,
bring a friend and learn about the subtle differences
between almonds and coconuts once and for all.

Macarons are Not Macaroons, it’s an adventure of
gastronomic proportions.

I Was A Zinester in the 90s with Ian McIntyre.
Woozy fanzine ran from 1992 to 2001 and encompassed
22 issues in a variety of formats from mini zines to books
as well as a tape and a CD. Bringing together a variety of
DIY currents in music, art, comics and politics Woozy was
a mainstay of the Melbourne zine scene (although issues
were also produced in the UK and Netherlands) involving
over 100 contributors with the majority of issues partially or
wholly laid out by hand. More than 20 launches and
benefits were also organised by the co-editors Iain McIntyre
and Laura MacFarlane who also ran Choozy which
distributed a number of zines and musical works in the late
1990s. Iain McIntyre will talk about the history of the zine and
1990s zine culture in general. He’ll also bring in copies of
Woozy for people to check out.
